# SDK Release Notes
> Release notes, installation instructions, and download archive for the Couchbase Python Client.
Couchbase Python SDK 4.x is built upon the Couchbase C++ SDK, and SDK 3.x is built upon LCB (libcouchbase), but both conform to the [SDK API 3.x](compatibility.md#api-version). The move to the Couchbase C++ SDK facilitates the introduction of [distributed ACID transactions](../howtos/distributed-acid-transactions-from-the-sdk.md).
> [!NOTE]
> Because the Python SDK is written primarily in C using the CPython API, the official SDK will not work on PyPy.

We always recommend using the latest version of the SDK — it contains all of the latest security patches and support for new and upcoming features. All patch releases for each dot minor release should be API compatible, and safe to upgrade; any changes to expected behavior are noted in the release notes that follow.

The Couchbase Python SDK no longer provides Python 3.9 wheels as Python 3.9 reached [end-of-life](https://peps.python.org/pep-0596/#lifespan) in October 2025\. See [Python Version Compatibility](compatibility.md#python-version-compat) for details on supported Python versions.
Multi operations that allow for durability no longer allow client and server durability to be mixed across operations. If durability is specified for a multi operation, any per-key-options must use the same durability type (either client or server durability).
All APIs (`acouchbase`, `couchbase`, and `txcouchbase`) no longer allow a cluster that has been closed to be reconnected. Any attempt to use a closed cluster will raise an exception. In order to establish a new connection after closing a cluster, a new cluster instance must be created.
The `QueryIndexManagement` `create_index()` API no longer allows `fields` to be used to specify index keys. The `keys` field must be used to indicate the keys to use in the index.

The Couchbase Python SDK will stop providing Python 3.9 wheels in a future release as Python 3.9 will reach [end-of-life](https://peps.python.org/pep-0596/#lifespan) in October 2025\. The "auto" network selection heuristic in the underyling C++ core has been changed to fall back to the "external" network if the "external" network is present. Previously, if there was no exact match between an address in the connection string and an address in the cluster topology reported by the server, the SDK would select the "default" network. Now, if there is no match and an "external" network is present, the SDK selects the "external" network.
